An initiative of the Public Records Advisory Council, sponsored by the Records Management Association of Australasia and the Australian Society of Archivists and supported by the Records Management Network.

2007 Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards

The Sir Rupert Hamer Awards are on again and nominations are now being accepted for this year's awards. The award ceremony for the 2007 awards has been moved from December 2007 to May 2008. For this year only nominations will be accepted for projects eligible in the 18 months from 1 July 2006 to 31 December 2007.

The 2007 Sir Rupert Hamer Awards ceremony will take place during Archives and Records Management Week in May 2008.

Note that for the 2007 awards new categories have been introduced that relate to community archives that are places of deposit (PoDs) appointed under Section 14 of the Public Records Act 1973. There are separate nomination guidelines and forms for the Places of Deposit and Victorian government agency categories.

Overview

Each year the Public Records Advisory Council (PRAC) offers the Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards, recognising excellence and innovation in records management in the Victorian public sector.

The Hamer Records Management Awards, an initiative of the PRAC, began in 1998. The Awards are named after Sir Rupert Hamer who was the Victorian Premier when the Public Records Act was passed in 1973 and when Public Record Office Victoria opened its first office and repository in 1975.

Awards are made to agencies achieving the following objectives:

  • Preservation of records of permanent value, including adherence to Public Record Office Victoria records management standards and ensuring government accountability and
  • Innovations in records management practices, including efficient delivery of service to clients and facilitation of access to current information in a cost-effective manner.

Awards can be made in five Victorian government agency categories and two places of deposit categories. The agency categories are: inner budget agencies, outer budget agencies, local government authorities, regional/rural agencies and small agencies.

A new section has been added to the Hamer Awards this year to recognise the activities of PROV appointed places of deposit. There are three awards available for PoDs themselves and one for government or water authorities that support PoDs in their communities.

Award nominations are considered by an Awards Judging Committee consisting of members of PRAC, PROV and the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) and the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. (ASA).

The RMAA, as the professional body representing the records management industry in Australia, is the major sponsor of the awards. Additional sponsorship is provided by the ASA for the Places of Deposit categories.

Government agency category award winners receive a commemorative plaque, and free yearly corporate membership of the RMAA. Details of previous winners can be found on the Past Winners page. Place of Deposit category award winners receive an institutional membership to the ASA and a copy of the publication Keeping Archives Third Edition which will be published in 2008. PoD government category winners will receive a framed certificate.
